Silver Denarius “Tribute Pennies”

   When asked about paying taxes, Jesus Christ asked in Luke 20:24 to see a “denarius”.  He did not just ask to see any currency, as the local currency coined by the procurators had no images of people. The “widow’s mite” coins which still circulated from the pre-Roman Hasmonian period of Jewish history, had no images of people either.  The shekel used for the Temple tax, sadly and paradoxily had the face of Hercules on it.  So to get His point across, Jesus had to ask for a denarius, which had the face of Ceasar.  These coins are rare and generally not found in hoards.
